Amharic radio stations to improve your Amharic

Listen to Amharic audios as much as you can- even if you don’t understand everything you hear. The more you listen to the language, the more it will become familiar to you. Ultimately you will improve your ability to comprehend and speak it.

The radio is a great tool to learn Amharic as it is always available and free.

Here are some online radio links that I have selected for listening at any time. These are stations native amharic speakers tune in to:

Sheger 102.1 FM

SHEGER 102.1 FM ‘Yenanetew Radio’ is the first private radio station in Ethiopia airing since 2009. This is a live entertainment radio from Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia.

An 18 hour all day broadcasting of Werewoch (radio talks), features, programs and music.

Sheger FM proposes re-streaming for selected programs in their online streaming and dedicated phone numbers from mid-night to morning 24 hours.

Fana Radio

Radio fana started broadcasting in 1994. This live radio from Addis-Ababa proses various topics of talk shows, news, culture, sports …interspersed by classic and modern Ethiopian as well as international music.

Voice of America Amharic

The Voice of America (VOA), which first went on the air in 1942, is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government. VOA provides news and information in more than 40 languages.

Broadcasting to the Horn of Africa region since September 1982, it covers three Ethiopian languages: Amharic, Afaan Oromo and Tigrigna. In the Amharic section you can listen to news and diverse cultural programs in from live streams or podcasts. News is organized by continent and countries. ጋቢና VOA proposes diverse shows to youngsters. ጋቢና “gabina” is the front row seat, next to the driver, in a taxi ride – it is symbolic of a fun ride.

Deutsche Welle Amharic

Deutsche Welle or DW is a German government-funded public international broadcaster. The service is available in 30 languages.
DW proposes a wide range of podcasts and livestreams in Amharic. Live program is aired every day from 16:00to 16:30 UTC. Topics are organized by themes: economics, science & technology, health & environment, sport, culture, youngs…Here you can find the broadcasting schedule.

Sheger FM and Fana radio have commercials since they’re live radios from Addis-Ababa, directly aiming at local listeners. This is a benefit as it allows you to remember words who come repeatedly in the jingle and learn at the same time the current trend of the country.

Once you’ve picked your favorite radio station, make it your soundtrack. Turn it on regularly: maybe on your way to work, while cooking, taking your shower, during your break…or all day long. Find what moment best works for you and stick to it.

Even if you’re not totally concentrated at what it is said, let the radio play as a background sound, and your ears familiarize with the language. You get to listen to naturally and well spoken Amharic, Ethiopian music, with some humor and news from Ethiopia.
